What is a Credit Union?
A credit union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative owned and operated by its members. The members pool their financial assets to provide funds for loans to themselves and their fellow members. In addition, the credit union offers a wide variety of financial services.
As a cooperative, a credit union is unique in the financial world. Credit unions exist to serve their members. The credit union, owned and directed by its members, is dedicated to the credit union philosophy of "People helping People". Rather than paying profits to stockholders, credit unions return earnings to members in the form of dividends and improved member services at rates frequently more favorable than those available at other financial institutions.

Who is Greater Eastern Credit Union?
Greater Eastern Credit Union was chartered in 1952 as a non-profit financial cooperative for employees of the Veterans Administration Medical Center. After years of serving government employees, the credit union’s Board of Directors had the foresight to open membership to the community so that everyone would have the opportunity to benefit from our financial services.
For over 58 years, we have consistently provided quality and secure financial services to our members. The general public has acknowledged our high standards in personal service by voting GECU the BEST Credit Union in the Tri-Cities.
GECU continues to earn the highest ratings awarded for financial performance. The Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions, our independent auditors and national rating firms Bauer Financial Reports, Inc and IDC Financial Publishing, Inc confirm our strong financial status year after year.
As of July, 2010 GECU assets totaled over $45 million with over 4,000 members. As we grow, we continue to search out the best in financial products for our members.
